Prickwillow Museum's new website has been created in association with the Ouse Washes Landscape Partnership and the Heritage Lottery Fund. Wind, Steam and Diesel for the Ouse Washes is the name of our project.
This project will tell the story of the Ouse Washes LP landscape in a variety of engaging ways for schools, local families and residents: through the film, through re-enactors and workshops, and through apps and interactive resources on hand-held devices. It will also link to the future of the area, explaining how the Ouse Washes (Bedford rivers) have an ongoing impact on the surrounding areas. This knowledge will encourage people to visit, respect and appreciate their unique and fascinating area, and to discover more about it. By raising awareness and understanding, specifically among younger generations, the project provides a sustainable population interested in the heritage of the landscape. Children who understand the landscape will have more respect for it, will support environmental projects in the area and pass this respect and pride onto their families and communities.
HistoryNeedsYou have been working with Prickwillow Museum volunteers to develop visual resources. Films showing the diesel pumping engines in the Museum's collection in action help to demystify them for non-engineers and especially children; a film about the 1947 floods shows the fragility of the landscape and the threats it poses, and the Wind, Steam and Diesel film communicates the way in which the landscape has changed dramatically through drainage. All of these resources will help children to understand and care for the unique landscape in which they live.

We look forward to many volunteer contributions to this blog, on subjects as varied as engineering, local history, geneaology, and reports on Museum events.
